The St. George Society of Maine is a fellowship of Catholic men united under the patronage of St. George, martyr. We seek to grow in steadfast faith and manly virtue, to fight sin and evil as St. George fought the dragon, and to lead our families as faithful husbands and fathers. Rooted in Maine and loyal to the Church's tradition, we strengthen one another in brotherhood, prayer, and works of charity.
St. George was a Christian soldier who gave his life for Christ at Lydda in Palestine, traditionally in the year 303, during the persecution of Diocletian. Honored from the earliest centuries in both East and West, he is counted among the great martyrs of the Church and stands first among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, the saints invoked in times of need. His feast is kept on April 23.
The Church honors him as a patron of soldiers, and many nations and cities have taken him as protector, among them England, Portugal, Aragon, Genoa, and Venice.
The famous story of St. George and the dragon is a medieval legend, made popular by the Golden Legend in the thirteenth century. The Church has long read the dragon as a picture of the real battle he won: the victory of faith over the devil and sin. For Catholic men, St. George is a model of courage, loyalty, and fidelity to Christ unto death.
O faithful servant of God and invincible Martyr, St. George; favored by God with the gift of faith, and inflamed with an ardent love of Christ, thou didst fight valiantly against the dragon of pride, falsehood, and deceit. Neither pain nor torture, sword nor death could part thee from the love of Christ. I fervently implore thee for the sake of this love to help me by thy intercession to overcome the temptations that surround me, and to bear bravely the trials that oppress me, so that I may patiently carry the cross which is placed upon me; and let neither distress nor difficulties separate me from the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Valiant champion of the Faith, assist me in the combat against evil, that I may win the crown promised to them that persevere unto the end.
St. George, pray for us.
